A Chinese woman who has suffered with giant legs since she was 6 years old is looking forward to wearing skirts and pants again after surgery. Wang Cheng, 24, has elephantiasis of the legs, a painful condition that has tripled the size of her legs, which weighed a total of 110 pounds.
Last month, Wang underwent a free, 10-hour surgery in Taiwan to reduce the swelling caused by the disease. As a result, her weight dropped from 182 to 136 pounds. "I feel so light," Wang said while lifting her legs without difficulty in her hospital bed.
The surgeon said he had never seen such an extreme case of elephantiasis in more than 30 years of medicine but was confident of success. "It’s very likely the disease started when her veins were obstructed, and blood flowed to the lymphatic vessels, thus leading to swelling in the legs," he said.
If all goes well with Wang’s rehabilitation, she will fly home in September when "a group of my high school classmates will hold a big party for me," she said. "I cannot wait to wear trousers and skirts."
