Sam Esquibel was born to a Colorado Springs family on October 1, just hours after an ultrasound showed some kind of tumor developing in the fetus’ brain. Three days later, Dr. Paul Grabb, a pediatric brain surgeon, performed surgery to remove the tumor.
But Grabb was in for a huge shock: he discovered a small foot growing inside Esquibel’s brain. But that’s not all. Grabb also found parts of an intestine in the folds of the tiny brain, in addition to another developing foot, leg and hand.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Grabb said. “It looked like the breach delivery of a baby coming out of the brain.”
The cause of the growth is unknown. It may be a teratoma, a congenital brain tumor composed of foreign tissue such as muscle, hair or teeth. But these types of tumors usually do not grow into complex appendages such as a foot. It could also be a case of fetus in fetu, in which a fetal twin forms inside the other twin.
