All hell is breaking loose in California. The ground is so hot in one spot just north of Los Angeles that it can melt the shoes right off your feet. An unexplained "thermal anomaly" caused a patch of land to exceed 800 degrees and started a brush fire that burned three acres. Firefighters rushed to the scene of the blaze, only to find smoldering brush over an incredibly hot ground.
One theory for the hot ground is oil or natural gas burning deep underground and escaping through cracks in the area. "We are a little perplexed at this point, to tell you the truth," geologist David Panaro said. "This is not your usual geological detective story."
Former geologist Allen King recently measured the ground in the area at 550 degrees, so hot that it melted the sole of his boots. "After that we were more cautious about standing in one place for too long," King said.
